Ekati Diamond Mine

The first Canadian diamond discovery was made in 1991. Two geologists (Fipke and Blusson) were led to the Lac de Gras area
by a 1955 geological study.

This study noted minerals, later recognized as diamond indicator minerals, initiating the beginning of what is targeted to be the
source of up to 12% of worldwide diamond production by 2005.
This goal has a planned value of $1 billion US ranking Canada
with South Africa as the world's third largest diamond producer.

Ekati, the aboriginal name, meaning "fat lake", was selected as the name for the first Canadian diamond mine located just below the Arctic Circle. The entire claim area contains a total of 121 kimberlite pipes. The Ekati Mine officially opened on October 14, 1998. Six
month later, the first million carats of Canadian rough diamonds
had been produced, enjoying a quality grade better than forecast.

Ekati's life expectancy is approximately 25 years.
The mine operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Diavik - the second Canadian diamond mine to commence
production is planning to open in the spring of 2003.
